Il vaccino meningococco contro la meningite: cos’è
Il vaccino meningococco è un vaccino contro la meningite. Quest’ultima è un’ infezione delle meningi cioè le membrane che avvolgono il cervello e il midollo spinale. Il batterio responsabile di questa infezione è il Neisseria Meningitidis, detto anche meningococco. Questa malattia è molto pericolosa, sopratutto perché colpisce i bambini sotto i cinque anni ma anche sotto un anno di età. Può colpire anche ragazzini dai 12 e i 21 anni e gli adulti. Esistono diversi tipi di meningite: di tipo B e C, diffuse in Europa, di tipo A, in Asia e Africa, mentre negli Stati Uniti ritroviamo il tipo Y e W135. Ma perché è così pericolosa? Cerchiamo di scoprire insieme quali sono i rischi.
I rischi della meningite
Una meningite batterica non curata può risultare mortale. La malattia, se non curata, può portare a conseguenze mortali ma i rischi più comuni sono altri: sordità, cecità e/o alterazioni mentali. E’ molto pericolosa nei bambini. Quanto più sono piccoli, tanto più aumenta l’esposizione al rischio di conseguenze gravi, in quanto la capacità di resistenza del corpo è relativamente scarsa. Anche gli anziani sono soggetti vulnerabili a questo tipo di infezione: il loro corpo, infatti, potrebbe non reagire adeguatamente alle cure.
Il vaccino meningococco di tipo C: quando farlo
Si tratta di un vaccino contro il meningococco, il batterio della meningite di tipo C. Esiste già da svariati anni e oggi rientra tra le vaccinazioni obbligatorie, quelle consigliate dal Piano nazionale prevenzione vaccinale. Rappresenta l’unico strumento per prevenire la meningite di tipo C ed è gratuito in tutta Italia. La sua diffusione ha garantito la rapida diminuzione della malattia, sempre meno frequente nel nostro paese. Generalmente vengono vaccinati i bambini di età compresa tra i 13 e i 15 mesi ma, se ci sono soggetti a più alto rischio, è possibile anticipare il vaccino anche a 3, 5 e 11 mesi. E’ consigliato il vaccino, inoltre, anche agli adolescenti che non l’hanno fatto in giovanissima età.
Effetti collaterali del vaccino contro il meningococco
Tra gli effetti collaterali di questo vaccino, ritroviamo gonfiore, rossore e dolore nel punto in cui si è fatta l’iniezione. A volte può comparire la febbre, mal di testa, sonnolenza e, in rari casi, anche reazioni allergiche. In casi di ipersensibilità ai componenti del vaccino o di febbre, prima di effettuarlo contattate il medico.
