Gravidanza a 40 anni? Non è più un’eccezione!
Secondo i dati Istat l’8,3% dei nati nel 2015 ha una madre di almeno 40 anni, il 10,3% una sotto i 25 anni di età. La posticipazione della maternità è molto accentuata per le madri italiane. Infatti il 9,3% ha più di 40 anni, percentuale che supera quella delle madri under 25 che è dell’8,2%.

Le motivazioni delle donne che partoriscono in età matura sono diverse. Alcune hanno scelto di dedicarsi prima alla carriera e di costruirsi una stabilità economica. Altre non hanno trovato prima un partner o hanno subito anni di trattamenti di fertilità.
Probabilmente i responsabili di questa tendenza sono una coincidenza di diversi fattori: culturali, sociali e medici.
Una gravidanza a 40 anni comporta alcuni rischi maggiori pertanto è fondamentale che la donna sia informata e consapevole.

Gravidanza a 40 anni: quali rischi per la mamma

Una gravidanza a 40 anni è, per definizione, a rischio. Fortunatamente, la maggior parte delle mamme mature portano a termine la gravidanza, mettendo al mondo bimbi sani.
Tuttavia, l’avanzare dell’età determina una diminuzione della fertilità. La donna subisce una riduzione progressiva del numero di ovociti.
Il calo della fertilità comincia dopo i 30 anni, ma diventa più significativo dopo i 35 e in particolare dopo i 40.
In età più matura si verificano nel 5% delle gravidanze problemi quali ipertensione e diabete gestazionale.
Aumenta anche il rischio di pressione alta, di problemi al sistema immunitario, di placenta previa, di taglio cesareo e di emorragia post-partum.
Anche l’incidenza di mortalità materna è più significativa, anche se, nei Paesi occidentali, è un evento decisamente raro.
Tutti queste manifestazioni dipendono dai cambiamenti fisiologici determinati dalla gravidanza. Anche lo stato di salute della donna prima della gestazione è molto determinante nell’andamento della gravidanza.

Gravidanza a 40 anni: quali rischi per il feto

L’età della mamma determina più alte percentuali di aborto spontaneo. L’incidenza per le donne tra i 20 e i 30 anni è del 9-17% delle gravidanze, intorno ai 35 anni sale al 20%, al 40% per le quarantenni e all’80% sopra i 45 anni.
Con l’età aumenta anche la possibilità che il bimbo sia affetto da anomalie cromosomiche.
Il rischio di avere un bambino con sindrome di Down, per esempio, sale da 1 su 1500 a 20 anni a 1 su 100 a 40.
Per essere a conoscenza della salute del bimbo si può ricorrere a diversi test di screening. Gli esami più comuni sono il bi-test, l’amniocentesi, la villocentesi o l’analisi del DNA fetale da sangue materno.
Altri aventi pericolosi possono essere: parto prematuro, riduzione della crescita fetale, distacco di placenta e morte in utero.

Secondo una ricerca di Barclay e Myrskylä della London School of Economics and Political Science i figli di madri più mature hanno importanti benefici a lungo termine. Tali bambini sarebbero più sani e riuscirebbero a raggiungere un grado di istruzione più alto rispetto ai ragazzi delle madri più giovani.
I risultati dello studio hanno evidenziato che i benefici connessi con l’essere nati da una madre over superano i singoli fattori di rischio.
Secondo i dati Istat le donne che hanno una gravidanza a 40 anni avrebbero alcune caratteristiche comuni: maggiore istruzione, condizione economica agiata e maggiore maturità. Questi fattori possono incidere sul modo di vivere la gravidanza e di educare il proprio bambino. Una mamma più grande avrà una maggiore consapevolezza rispetto alla propria condizione e ai cambiamenti da affrontare. Pertanto anche i casi di depressione post-partum hanno un’incidenza minore tra le mamme mature.

Mettere al mondo un figlio rappresenta uno stravolgimento nella vita di una donna. Se avremo accetteremo questo dono con serenità ed ottimismo, saremo, a qualunque età, ottime madri, con tutte le nostre imperfezioni.
